Our Thai frustration with the holy cow of official historical narrative is here on grand display, in one transcendent scene after another. While some are put off by the Aphichartpong Wide Shot Long Takes seemingly compulsory for wannabe art films, these WS long takes do actually take you somewhere—most of all inside yourself, your knot of psychic resentment that so much of Thai history is forbidden, to Thai filmmakers especially. The transitions are literal but well thought-out and choreographed, one hell of an achievement for a low-budget Thai indie. The literalness of its metaphors actually adds to the film’s fairytale quality. Despite a couple of weak but forgivable scenes, this is one of the best and most authentically Thai film ever made. How satisfying that it came from this country’s heart, Pimai, the lovely small town around the Shiva temple of massive stones, seemingly placed by giants.
