Aglow in the dark, as we sleep, red and green fiendish eyes watch us with unblinking gaze, as if spying on human behaviour or else invoking spells to keep us from ever waking up again. They hold sway over our way of life—the Western lifestyle dependent on countless electronic pets, the household appliances or spirits that feed on electrical power. This is the life that has been chosen for us, which the little man has no choice but to accept.
Multi-media artist and distinguished experimental filmmaker Achitaphon Piansukprasert is full of questions and doubts over the contemporary way of life. He wonders: can we ever reimagine a different version of the good life? His new work ‘They Feed On Light’, displayed in light boxes, is a set of long-exposure low-light photographs that have captured the movements of the pinprick light on electrical appliances in the home, in the bedroom. They look like materialising souls from beyond, or eyes that float in the dark, that we might just encounter upon awakening in the dead of night. In contrast his faint drawings of ancient sacred statues seem remote as his own culture’s past Oriental civilisation; remote and irrelevant and irretrievably lost.
Achitaphon Piansukprasert graduated in film from Bangkok University and post-graduated in visual arts from Silpakorn University. His intense experimental films have been shown in film festivals in Thailand and abroad, with ‘Blood Rain’ winning the Golden Ganja at the 3rd Amazing Stoner Movie Fest 2023. He also writes film and literary reviews for online media.
