Compared to the epic high melodrama of Thai politics, Singapore seems tame. But you’d be surprised. There may be less scope for emoting but the tectonic shifts over there are just as threateningly grand.

Green Zeng’s images of internal exile burst at the seams with longing—a terrible wasting disease of homesickness for a home you can’t return to; it seems to be right there in front of you but it no longer exists.

Foundation Cinema Oasis is thrilled to celebrate the work of this devastating multi-disciplinary artist from Singapore, with the Thai Premiere of his searing feature film ‘The Return’ at Cinema Oasis and the photographic exhibition ‘An Exile Revisits the City’ and video installation ‘Student Reconstruction’ of forced TV confessions of political detainees, at Galerie Oasis from 4 May to 2 June 2019

Green Zeng will be here in person to give a MovieTalk / ArtTalk, in English with Thai translation, with Q & A, on 4 May at Cinema Oasis. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear from the soulful and unfettered voices of Singapore.

Curator Manit Sriwanichpoom: “Green Zeng has sensitively cast a lonely, white-haired man as the personification of change wrought by time, deliberately composing each image to evoke postcards of sightseeing attractions. To a casual observer, the old man is almost invisible, lost along with the history of the place that has been turned into a tourist site. With these 2 levels of meaning and significance, the artist is saying that Singapore edits its story by choosing to present only aspects of its history that portray an orderly and peaceful society, stranger to the chaos of other nations.”
